Flora and fauna

Flora and fauna

Madagascar's unique flora and fauna are the result of millions of years of geographical isolation. Due to the separation from the African mainland around 88 million years ago, the island's ecosystem developed independently. Isolation favored the evolution of endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The wildlife is remarkable, led by the lemurs, Madagascar's charismatic primates. Also discover the "small five" of Madagascar, which includes the tiny Brookesia chameleon, the tree-climbing Microcebus mouse lemur, the ant-hunting Phelsuma day gecko, the tiny Uroplatus gecko and the bizarre Aye-Aye. National parks such as Andasibe-Mantadia and Ranomafana offer fascinating insights into the island's rich biodiversity.

The landscapes vary from dense rainforests to high plateaus to dry savannahs. The unique Baobab Avenue is known for its impressive baobab trees, which create a magical picture, especially at sunset.
